Youth Dominant in Cup Win

Treharris Youth dominant in first round win

This game was the first round in the newly expanded WRU Youth competition this year for the first time being broken down into cup, plate and bowl categories. This first round tie took place in the WRU National Youth Bowl and saw Treharris take on Barry.  Due to on-going main field renovations at Treharris Phoenix this tie was being played at Treharris Park, somewhat of a fortress for Treharris in the past. This game also saw the debut as official Youth team Captain for Sam Redmond and Curtis Morris as Vice-Captain.

Conditions on the day we perfect for running rugby with a firm ground underfoot with warm sunshine and limited breeze. Taking the field against Treharris were a young Barry side who had due to limited experience in the forwards had decided to opt for uncontested scrums.

The game kicked off with Treharris playing from left to right. Treharris kicked off and early forward encounters saw some great forward momentum being seized, within 2 mins Treharris were awarded a penalty with Brad “the boot” Jones taking stepping forward for his first kick of the game, his effort just going wide of the upright.

Hard running and great effort at the breakdown saw Treharris continuing to make the hard yards securing a line out just outside the Barry try line. A secure line out and subsequent hard drive saw Jacob Evans crossing the line for the first points of the game with Brad Jones securing the conversion 7-0 Treharris.

Excellent push up defence and tackling saw Barry struggling to make yards and territory against a Treharris side that had put some early markers down in the game. Continuing with early success forward domination and aggression at the breakdown saw Andrew Llewellyn cross after 25 mins for his first of the day, on this occasion Brad Jones attempt goes narrowly wide 15-0 Treharris.

Treharris continued to be a force to be reasoned with at the break down and set plays. Treharris has great success against opposition line out as well as with Jacob Evans and Josh collier creating a solid platform to work from.  Some excellent running rugby again coming to the fore with great running angles being shown from the backs and another slick move resulting in Andrew Llewellyn crossing once again after 30 mins, Brad jones stepping up but sending it wide from a very tight angle 20-0 Treharris.

The forwards now were not going to be left out of the party and todays starting front row of Stefan Jones, Brad Morris and Curtis Morris giving a great first half performance. Another forward dominated move saw Josh collier go over from close range with Brad Jones sending over the conversion 27-0 at half time.

After regrouping after the break Barry did well in defence holding out Treharris for long periods with some great hits and defence going in on both sides. Having carried and made yards all day Darrian “dingle” Pritchard crossed after 60 mins for a well-deserved try and a successful conversion from Brad Jones 34-0 Treharris.

With Barry aiming to break out Adam Jones delivered an outstanding performance at full back and working linking well together with Sam Horton to build a solid platform and from the back and build through the phases.

Some great running rugby from Treharris with Alec Jones operating at 10 and Sam Redmond pushing the team on saw the ball being moved out once again to the backs and saw Andrew Llewellyn crossing for his hat trick on the day and being converted by Brad Jones. Barry’s young team had not given up and saw a number of attempts to break Treharris strong grip on the game. Treharris aimed to finish on a high and that they did with Curtis Morris going over from close range on 78 mins and Brad jones successful conversion.

This was a real team performance by Treharris with every player showing they were up for the fight, a brave performance by the young Barry side saw a hard day at the office but emerging with every credit in terms of fighting spirit and not letting heads drop right to the end. For the Youth an action packed day of off the field activity and announcements were rounded of by an excellent, ruthless team performance.
