Superb win for youth

A muggy, mildly moist Aberdare greeted Treharris Youth for the first game of the 2014/15 season with an away fixture to Hirwaun. The game starts with a young Hirwaun side opting for passive scrums, not the best start but the mature Treharris forwards take it in their stride.
The game starts with Treharris playing left to right. Forwards performing well on kick off winning the first attack. Five minutes into the start and a lovely penalty chip into touch by Adam Jones puts Treharris on the Hirwaun 5 metre line for a throw in. The Treharris pack gather around Sam Redmond (C) and drive him over the line. A great attempt to convert by Alec Jones but the game restarts at 0-5.

Passive scrums not doing our forwards any favours but Rhys Davies keeps control of the pack at scrum half. Poised and accurate the backs get good ball from Rhys, now under significant pressure from his opposite number.
20 mins in and Andrew Llewellyn takes a quick break down the left side of the field to run in the second try...conversion missed but Treharris lead 0-10, Hard work is now paying off. The Treharris forwards are hitting hard and creating chances for the backs. 28 mins and a well deserved 0-17 lead is taken by a Rhys Davies try converted by Brad Jones.

Now the game picks up, frustration from Hirwaun causes the Treharris number 8, Darrian Pritchard to run over a lovely battling try on the far left. 34 mins gone and Treharris lead 0-22.

The game restarts with the ball being kicked directly into the waiting arms of Daniel Greening. A powerful run sets up the Treharris forwards to recycle the ball into the backs. Ball eventually lands back into the path of number 8, Darrian Pritchard. A well timed and direct hand off puts him across for his second try under the posts. Conversion by Brad Jones, 0-29.

Half time gave the boys time to regroup and get some useful words of advice from the coaches. Heads held high the game re-starts. Again the restart lands nicely for second row, Daniel Greening. This time he is supported by Alec Jones and the two of them gain ground over a tiring Hirwaun team. 5 mins into the second half and the forwards are at it again. Superb drive over the line for Sam Redmond's second try.  Accurate conversion by Brad Jones and the score increases, 0-36

The right wing is now seeing some good rugby. Combination of Brad Jones's football skills and the speed of Andrew Llewellyn put Treharris in front 0-43.

The icing on the cake was to follow. Alec Jones puts a lovely chip into space and Morgan Jenkins comes from nowhere to pick up a well deserved try. Another conversion from Brad Jones ends the game, fifteen mins into the second half, 0-50.

First game of the season and it was a spectacle. Supporters enjoyed, players enjoyed. Nothing can be taken away from a young but spirited Hirwaun squad. Treharris showed maturity for a mixed age team. Bring on the first home game against Barry YRFC.
